The following are guidelines for everyone who reads at the front of the church.
First reading
Introduction to an Epistle, for example:
“The Epistle is from Romans, Chapter 4, starting at verse 1. This can be found on or about page 193 in the New Testament section towards the back of the pew Bibles.” Give people time to find the page, then repeat, “Romans, Chapter 4, starting at verse 1.”
Introduction to an Old Testament reading ,for example:
“The Old Testament reading is from Isaiah, Chapter 52, starting at verse 13. This can be found on or about page 717 in the Old Testament section towards the front of the pew Bibles.” Give people time to find the page, then repeat “Isaiah, Chapter 52, starting at verse 13.”
At the end of either reading you say “This is the word of the Lord.”
Second reading
Introduction to the Gospel, for example only:
“The Gospel is from John, chapter 8, starting at verse 12. This can be found on or about page 129 in the New Testament section towards the back of the pew Bibles.” Give people time to find the page, then repeat “John, chapter 8, starting at verse 12.”
Then, before you start the reading, “Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John.” Then lead the response, “Glory to you, O Lord.”
At the end of the reading you say “This is the Gospel of the Lord.” Then lead the response, “Praise to you, O Christ.”
