A Makeover for St Mark's
Our exciting new plans will benefit everyone
Being welcoming is a key part of our mission
A church is more than just a building. And St Mark’s is more than just a church. Each month, over a dozen groups meet here, and over 800 people come through our doors. That puts all of us who come to worship on Sundays, Wednesdays and other times at the heart of a church that plays a major role in the local community. From parent and toddler groups to Brownies, senior citizens, the IntoUniversity offices and a regular homeless shelter, we at St Mark’s host a wide variety of groups that have no other place to go nearby. It is part of our Christian gift to our neighbourhood.
Why a makeover?
Built in 1914, St Mark’s is, like the rest of us, not getting any younger. We all know that the facilities need updating and that our building needs some general maintenance. So we’ve come up with an extensive three-phase programme to tackle the problems caused by wear and tear and to make the whole place better for everybody.
What does it involve?
The first phase involves installing new boilers, along with essential repairs to the roof and the lights. Next we will build a new kitchen, toilets and entrance foyer, all with wheelchair access, and then the final phase focuses inside the church itself.
Who can help?
The project is set to make demands on us all. First of all, we will need money to see this through to the end, so please think about regularly giving extra for a year to help. We are seeking funding from many other bodies too. The project will also need help from volunteers – there will be lots of little things to do where even an hour of your time will make a difference. We’d love to hear from anyone with fundraising skills, and everyone with experience and enthusiasm is very welcome. Please pray for the success of this project. Our church is a wonderful place to worship and we are honoured that so many people want to use St Mark’s.
The official launch of this project will take place in church on 26 April 2009 and we urge everyone to come and find out more.
