After reconstruction and decoration work from April 2008 IntoUniversity Brent began working with young people in May 2008 and was officially opened on July 7th 2008. Since then IntoUniversity Brent has built up its position in the community, running all 3 strands of the IU model with local young people- Academic Support, Mentoring and FOCUS. We work with pupils aged 7 up to 18, their families, local primary and secondary schools, other statutory organisations, community groups, corporations and supporters. We deliver the IntoUniversity programme of high quality, multi-stranded long-term inspiration and support to young people- helping them to fulfill their potential.
Academic Support runs in our safe and friendly classroom space, empowering young people to progress academically. We have our staff team of university-educated tutors, joined by over 15 current university student and university graduate volunteers. We also have books and IT facilities. It is a stimulating learning space where pupils from different schools come together to enjoy their academic development.
Monday and Thursday 3.30- 5:30pm: Secondary Academic Support. Support from graduate staff and university-educated volunteers on schoolwork and exam revision. Further education and career advice from Brent Connexions on Thursdays.
Tuesday and Wednesday 3.45- 5pm: Primary Academic Support. Support from graduate staff and university-educated volunteers on schoolwork and a target approach to improving literacy and numeracy. Plus creative-themed project work.
Our Mentoring Scheme recruits young people in Years 6-13 from Academic Support. It is a reward for commitment, good behaviour and keenness to think about future options. Mentees are trained and then paired with trained university student volunteers and can meet up to look at academic, social and future topics. They are paired together for a minimum of an academic year. They set targets at their very first meeting and then structure their meetings to work towards achieving their targets during the year. We have matched over 15 pupils with mentors from across the London University this academic year 08/09.
Mentoring pairs can meet Monday to Friday at the centre from 3.30-6pm during term-time and from 10-6pm during holidays.
Our FOCUS provision runs in partnership with local primary and secondary schools. We have a primary package of provision that includes material on National Curriculum topics, university and transition to secondary school. Our secondary package examines study skills including learning styles and revision techniques, as well as a series of sessions about the academic and social aspects of Further and Higher Education. The FOCUS programmes consist of workshops, days weeks and weekends. All FOCUS provision is based on experiential activities- learning together personally and as part of a team. The aim is to raise aspiration and provide key skills to achieve long-term academic targets.
The education centre is run by the IU Brent team, led by Centre Manager Dan Baker who can be contacted at
